Michael Perkins is a Saskatoon-based professional trumpet and flugelhorn performer, composer, educator, and visual artist. An internationally recognized, award-winning music educator, he has performed across Canada and around the world, blending classical artistry with contemporary jazz. Whether on stage, in the studio, or through his abstract artwork inspired by music, Michael is dedicated to creating meaningful and memorable artistic experiences.

The Michael Perkins Quartet (MPQ), brings the sounds of the Great American Songbook to life. This group of four talented Saskatoon musicians have decades of experience performing not only in Saskatoon, but across Canada as well as internationally. You can expect the warm swing and mellow charm of classics from the 1940s to the 1970s featuring flugelhorn, drums, piano and bass. MPQ serves up timeless tunes, cool grooves and vintage jazz magic.

Michael Perkins is a professional classical and jazz trumpet/flugelhorn player, composer, clinician, adjudicator, and visual artist based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  Michael is an international award-winning music educator who has performed, and conducted groups, in Europe, United States, Middle East, Caribbean, and Canada. 

In Saskatoon, Michael performs with the Michael Perkins Quartet, The Stone Frigate Big Band, and the University of Saskatchewan Symphony Orchestra, and the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra. Michael’s journey in music reflects his dedication to crafting unique sounds and connecting with listeners.  His music epitomizes a blend of his classical training and contemporary jazz, attracting a diverse audience. With a passion for performance, he brings charisma and energy to every stage. 

Michael is a past coordinator of the Vancouver Kiwanis Jazz Festival, the B.C. Interior Jazz Festival and founder of multiple groups including an original funk band, The Mammals, (Kelowna); the Sea'T'Sky Big Band, (Squamish); and the Nicola Valley Brass Quintet (Thompson-Okanagan); and the Night Owl Orchestra, (Central Okanagan). 

 

As a freelance trumpet player, clinician and adjudicator, Michael has performed with The Legendary Lake Monsters, the Okanagan Symphony, the Kamloops Symphony, the Michael Garding Big Band, Symphonic Rock Revolution, and the Justin Glibbery Quintet. He has also served as Music Director for musical theatre and the BC Summer Games and enjoys every opportunity he gets in the recording studio.  His third CD, Reflections, can be heard on Spotify and iTunes. 

Michael is also a visual artist who translates music into colour, geometry, and the abstract capturing rhythm, melody, and human emotion.

 

Michael holds degrees, from Western University in Ontario, in Music Education and Education, and feels privileged to have spent his entire life in music “having never had to do a real job”.  He was Director and Music Educator of Kelowna Secondary School and Collingwood School in West Vancouver. Michael comes from a musical family.
